TYPES OF HOLDS

JUGS SLOPERS CRIMPS PINCHES POCKETS

JUGS

A person holding a blue, deep, jug climbing hold.

Jugs are traditionally large and comfortable. Most jugs have space for one or two hands to fit on it. It's common for it to be very deep, and considered a good hold.

SLOPERS

A person holding a green, round, sloper climbing hold.

Slopers are a curved or rounded hold that lack any deep or sharp edges. They are often challenging to hang off of. They usually aren't found on beginner climbs.

CRIMPS

A person holding a pink, thin, crimp climbing hold.

Crimps are very small edges. They are usually the width of a finger pad, at most. These are one of my favorite holds!

PINCHES

A person holding a blue, rectangular, PINCHES climbing hold.

Pinches require your thumb to be placed on one sider, while your fingers are on the other side. Grip strength is important here, especially from your thumb. This type of hold challenges me the most.

POCKETS

A person holding a gray, shallow, pocket climbing hold.

Pockets are basically holes. They can range in sizes. Some can be very small, only allowing one finger. Others can be larger, allowing more finger space.
